Dominos has finally gone Vegan!
Truth be told, we were taken a little bit by surprise - the company announced a trial in a limited number of stores. A couple of weeks later they'd gone for a full national roll out. That's not a complaint of course. In our part of rural Essex there aren't a huge amount of vegan options for takeaways and any additional option is greatly received in this busy household.
So, what options are there? At the moment it's just the two pizzas available; your standard margherita or a vegan version of the veggie supreme pizza. While, James would loved to have a seen a vegan alternative to the meat feast with some This Isn't products on the top, this is a good start!
When we ordered, we thought it would be rude not to give one of each a try - Amy went for the Margherita and James has the Veggie Supreme option. Here's what we thought:
Amy's Vegan Margherita
I really liked the cheesiness of this pizza! I like that there's a good amount of tomatoes on top too, it just adds a little something extra to the texture. It's a really good first attempt at a vegan option.
We've had Dominos a couple of times since they launched these new vegan options and the first margherita I had was really good. Second time around there was quite a lot more herbs on the top of the pizza and it really wasn't quite as good, but I think I was just unlucky.
If I'm giving a score based on the first one I had, I'd give it 8/10.
James' Vegan Vegi Supreme
I'm used to having the dairy vegi supreme pizza from before we were vegan and I really like how fresh the pizza used to taste, so I was really excited about this one. You'll be pleased to hear that I wasn't disappointed. The base is good and tasty - it's not the same as the 'normal' Dominos base, but I can't quite put my finger on what's different. It's a good vegan alternative though.
Otherwise the tomato sauce is good and the veggies on top are just what you'll remember.
The important thing here though is the cheese! It's the million dollar ingredient when it comes to vegan alternatives. Thankfully, it's a good cheese. It's got a nice, subtle flavour and it isn't as sticky as you might expect and I was really pleased it didn't stick to the top of your mouth like the vegan pizzas you get in Belle Italia.
I'd give the pizza a solid 8.5/10.
And... what about the vegan garlic dip?
For James this is what makes Dominos and again we weren't disappointed. A good, strong flavour a consistency very similar to the original - it's a winner.
The wrap-up
If you're not sure whether to give it a go, then we're not ashamed to announce that we've had 3 separate orders in the last 2 weeks and while we're all Dominos-ed out for a little while, we will definitely be ordering them again! Better than anything though, is that once we're allowed to interact socially again, Dominos' is back on the menu when we meet up with friends, which makes everything so much easier!
